Brachioplasty - Arm Lift

Problem- Some areas of adipose (fat) tissue and skin in the human body are resistant to improvement by dieting and exercise.

Solution- Adipose (fat) tissue and skin can be removed by body contouring (abdominplasty, tummy tuck, brachioplasty, arm lift, thigh lift).

Many factors contribute to a persons shape and size.  Some of those may include genetics (family traits), diet, activity, gender (hormonal influences), and age.

Body contouring surgery has been performed for many years and has evolved and improved since that time.  Some of the refinements for body contouring include better surgical techniques, a better understanding of anatomy, improvements on anesthesia techniques and medicines, improvements in post-operative care, and new and improved surgical equipment.

Body contouring removes adipose (fat) and skin using specialized surgical techniques.  Anesthesia used for body contouring can be local anesthesia alone, local anesthesia and intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia.  A good general principle of surgery, including body contouring, is to use enough anesthesia to perform a procedure and no more.  For most patients in my practice, local anesthesia with intravenous sedation is adequate for the body contouring procedure.  The best candidates for body contouring have good skin tone and are not obese.  Patients that are overweight can be treated with body contouring, but in my practice, body contouring is not recommended for weight loss.    Body contouring is usually recommended for a patient that wants to change their shape and they have a large amount of redundant (extra) skin and adipose (fat) in the area of concern.  In the brachioplasty (arm lift procedure) the scars are concealed on the inside of the arms.   For patients that are overweight more than one hundred (100) pounds, I offer referral to consults for dietary counseling, and for consultation with a surgeon that performs weight loss surgery.  Body contouring can remove stretch marks in some patients.  The post-operative recovery from liposuction is usually brief.  Most patients who get liposuction require very little time off of work, and very few complain of anything more than minor discomfort which is easily controlled with oral pain medicine.

Factors that could influence your body contouring procedure may include:

• Pre-operative state (your personal situation before surgery)

• The skill, training, and experience of the surgeon

• The skill, training, and experience Staff

• The skill, training, and experience of your Anesthesia Personnel

• The Patient’s willingness to follow post-operative instructions

• The incidence of inherent risks before and after surgery specific to each individual patient

In order to get the best result with body contouring, as with any surgery of this type, this procedure must be combined with a regular exercise and nutrition program to assist in muscle toning and weight control.   Weight gain or lack of physical activity will adversely affect the final result of the body contouring procedure.  In my practice we frequently refer patients for assistance to nutrition and exercise programs.

An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove loose skin and excess fat deposits in the upper arm. With age, upper arm skin can become loose and flabby. Plastic surgeons will discuss brachioplasty with patients who want to tighten this skin and look as good as they feel. In some cases your plastic surgeon may suggest that liposuction be used alone or in conjunction with an arm lift to remove excess fat in the upper arms.
